Pricing & Grading

Briar Grading: Pipes are available in 2 finishes - Smooth (Gold grade, Signature grade, and Minaria grade), and Sandblast (Silver grade). Within each finish there are 5 levels of grading numbered 1-5, with a 1 representing a simple pipe with mixed grain and a 5 representing an extremely complex piece featuring perfect wood.

1 Entry Grade:
Simple shapes, good grain but without specific pattern or tightness

2 Normal Grade:
Good quality briar and nice grain with small flaws

3 High Grade:
Excellent quality briar with only pinpoint flaws at worst.

Excellent quality briar and unique and outstanding designs, extraordinary ring grain patterns, etc.

Top Grade:
Flawless quality briar of exceptional shape, grain, and design. Note that I have not yet made a sandblast I considered to be a grade 5.

Flawless quality briar of exceptional shape, grain, and design, with no visible flaws. To date I have made only 1 grade 5.

(Hand-signed designs too unusual or off-beat for normal grading)

Mostly sandblasted, possibly partially carved, such as simple candledrip-type designs

Mostly sandblasted, more elaborately designed

3 High Grade:
Complex designs, extraordinary grain displays, possibly partial smooth/sandblast mix

Exceptionally unusual, twisted egg-type designs requiring many labor hours.

Flawless quality briar of exceptional shape, grain, and design. Note that I have not yet made a Signature pipe I considered to be a grade 5.

Minaria Grade
(This is the highest grade I make, and must combine flawlessness with dynamic and unique design. Thus far in my pipemaking career, I have made 2 pipes that received the M stamp. Individually priced.)

This is a general discount to the price of pipes that are smaller than my usual, which would mean pipes equivalent to a Dunhill Group 2 or below.
