The scenic cliffs of St. Marc
St. Marc is a sentimental favorite with us for many reasons. It's beautiful, it's hidden away from the rush, and most of all it was one of the first nice experiences we had after we arrived in France. The first several months were an ongoing nightmare of stress and disasters, but one afternoon we took a detour on a trip to St. Nazaire, just following a small "beach" sign we spotted. What we found, after getting lost in several confusing roundabouts and ending up in a small old village, was the beach of St. Marc.. possibly one of the most scenic places we have found along the Loire-Atlantique coast.

Me, looking out to sea from the cliffside trails.
It's a great place to spend an afternoon because there is a nice wooded trail along the edge of the cliffs, so one can enjoy the trees in autumn or the sandy beaches in summer, all without tripping over tourists every ten feet.

A perfect September day for photography.

St. Marc manages to combine beautiful, dramatic, and cozy.

Typical schizo dress for a Brittany September - jackets, coats, short sleeves, and swimming trunks...

The cliffside staircases wind crazily around the rocky face, and several are closed off while others are downright harrowing - but fun!

Look closely and you can see a German gun emplacement in the cliff, left over from WW2

Another nice feature of the cliff trail is that it features a playground and picnic area, where Emily can play on the sit-and-spin.
