Like the Tankard #5, this is another example of a contrast
staining for sandblasts that I've been working with. I wanted
to do a big, rather savage freehand, and I particularly wanted to do
another fancy stem - I can't remember the last time I turned a complex
stem like this, which is handcut from black acrylic.
Positives: Dramatic! Definitely a pipe that says,
"Look at me". I LOVE the bottom, which is a strange thing to
say about a plateau bottom since usually they're all pretty much the
same. However, the staining combination gave it a weird sort
of inferno look that somehow reminds me of Tim Burton's devil from the
movie Legend. The ring grain is incredible - Very tight and
very detailed. In fact, the pipe would have been a grade 4 if
not for...
Negatives: I slipped just a little
when drilling the airhole and it's off-center in the bottom of the
mortise, though it meets the bowl perfectly. I cursed about
this briefly, but then had a flash. The pipe was designed
from the start to use the curved
tenon airhole inlet I've developed, and I suddenly realized
that there was no reason I couldn't simply turn the tip slightly to
make it match properly again. So, the airhole connects and a
cleaner passes to the bowl, and in the end, I doubt anyone would ever
guess it was off without inspecting the bottom of the mortise with a
flashlight. But, I graded it down a notch for this, so it's a
solid 100+ euros less expensive than it might have been.
Darned costly little slip!
