Name: The Pogo
Notes:
What name could better fit? I had originally set this bowl aside
to become a bamboo-shanked pipe, but could never make up my mind what
to do with it. Finally, as usual, after the bowl sat on the
workbench for about six months, I picked it up one day and saw this
shape perfectly. I like the whole idea enough that I intend to make
more of these, evolving the design as I go. Positives:
The grain on the bowl and "foot" is all excellent with tons of
bird's-eye top, bottom, front and back. I haven't used any of
this tortoiseshell acrylic material for stems in quite some time, and
I'd forgotten how beautiful it is. I'd also forgotten how hard to
bend the stuff is! Unlike friendly rubbery ebonite, this acrylic
has about a one degree window between when it becomes flexible enough
to bend, and when it begins to bubble or just snap. A pipecleaner
will pass easily from bit to bowl, and it has an easy, open draw.
While I'm sure collectors will either love or hate the styling,
at least you won't see anyone else smoking the same thing! It's
actually a fairly practical smoke, with nice thick bowl walls and of
course it doesn't need a pipe stand.
Negatives:
The tortoiseshell stem can be brittle material, so I would not
recommend this pipe to anyone who clenches hard in their teeth.
