Name: The Nemo
Notes:
Named after the Captain, of course, not the cartoon fish! I
originally planned to call it something like "the Squid" but that just
sounded silly, and I couldn't find an alternate version that I liked
(The French "poulp" brings the wrong connotations in English, and
Archeteuthis is right out). It IS a squid, though, at least in
body, even if it only has one tentacle. Finally, when it was
finished enough to sit it up, I immediately pictured it in the hands of
Captain Nemo at the bottom of the ocean, being smoked after a seaweed
dinner. Positives:
Balances, for starters. Plus, it isn't a pipe that anyone else at
the pipe club will be smoking, which could be good or bad. The
handcut acrylic tortoiseshell stem removes from the black "shank", but
the rest of the pipe is fixed in place. However, a cleaner will
pass to the base of the bowl's airhole, and the briar airhole can be
reamed out as needed. Despite being quite light for its size and
complexity, it offers a nicely large bowl. Very pretty grain.
Negatives:
Not easy to carry around, and you'd certainly never want to drop
it. Definitely meant to be a "hand-held only" pipe too, not a
clencher.
