Name: The Flame

Notes:  IMO, one of the prettiest pipes I've made.  I'll try to stfile the superlatives as much as I can, but it was certainly a pleasant surprise.  This was intended to fill a special order for a sandblast of roughly this size and shape.  I didn't particularly worry about flaws, therefore, knowing it was meant for blasting, and was considerably surprised at just how perfect it was.  I kept sanding and shaping, and it just stayed flawless.  All the way to the end, I half-hoped for some flaw to appear that would allow it to be blasted and fill the order, but instead I got one really exceptionally pretty smooth pipe.

Positives:   A big bowl coupled with compact overall dimensions make it a friendly and well-balanced smoker.  I used my curved tenon inlet technique again and it passes a cleaner easily from bit to bowl... AND, the shank airhole can be reamed with a straight bit.  The handcut stem is made from my new German ebonite supplier, and is lovely stuff, very high gloss.  When it's polished up, it's almost as shiny and fade-resistant as acrylic, with the softness of ebonite.  I've been living with the same material in some test pipes for months now, and really enjoying it on my Fantasy Calabash.  Silent draw with not a hint of whistle.  I backpedaled a tiny bit with this pipe, and made the bit thicker to allow a larger V slot for easier draw and cleaner passage than on some of the uber-thin bits I've been doing.  I debated a bit over how strongly to stain it, because it would certainly have been dramatic with a strong contrast stain, but in the end I opted for, "Less is more" and just applied a thin tint of radiant orange to give grain a little "flame" glow while not obscuring anything.

Negatives:   Nada.  The sort of pipe I wish I could make every day!
