Name: The Elrond
Notes:
Emily and I have been rewatching the LOTR trilogy this past week late
at night. The movies have picked up a good amount of personal
resonance now, since they came out across the scope of our move to
France and our first few traumatic years here, leaving each film
invested with a lot of moments that remind us of personal adventures
and losses. Sadly, even after several viewings, the scene of
Legolas skateboarding down the steps on a shield is still as stupid and
jarring as ever... There
was really no choice but to name this pipe something elvish, since it's
(to my eye) quintessentially elvish in line and form. And given
its status, rarity, and grade, who could be better to name it after?
Positives: The second
grade 5 smooth pipe that I have made in my entire pipemaking career.
Full grain, no bald spots, fantastic bird's-eye, and totally
unstained. It's one of the most perfect pieces of briar I've
encountered in my years of carving - In fact, it would have been the
third M grade pipe if the shape had been a little more dramatic and
splashy. As it is, it's hard to get a nicer piece of briar.
The airhole is centered and passes a cleaner easily, despite the
extreme bend. The very pale color of the briar suggests excellent
potential for coloring through the years. Even the stamping is
good!
Negatives: Well, it wouldn't be a grade 5 if I had anything to write here.
