Name: Bent Bulldog - Natural, 2008

Notes:  Zowie!  As with the previous unstained bulldog, I had to shoot the pics here in multiple ways and lighting because the flat-on flash pictures just didn't convey the sheer detail and depth of the sandblast at all - Just compare the difference in bowl detail between the top and bottom pics.  This is the last of the bulldogs for the moment.  I've finished up the various orders and made an extra for the catalog, and this one is a little special - It was done with a finer blasting media than I normally use, and it shows in the extremely sharp detail of the grain.  I didn't realize we were nearly out of media until the bag was empty, and I was forced to do this blast with some older, much finer media that I stopped using several years ago (While the actual surface produced is superior, the finer media also eats vacuum motors at a rate of one per year, and passes right through the filters, making it a nasty health risk).  I do love the extreme sharpness of the surface, though - Shame I had to stop using this stuff!

Positives:   A 56 gram Group 4+ is just about my personal perfect size and weight for a pipe.  Very pale briar color which offers excellent coloring potential - This will probably darken up nearly as dramatically as a meerschaum.  I'm pretty pleased with the shape, too.

Negatives:  It has two extremely tiny little black spots on it.  I could have disguised them with stain, but I really wanted to leave this natural, and they'll be invisible after the thing darkens from a little smoking, anyway.
