Notes: There's quite a story behind this pipe! It was drilled and rough-shaped in August of 2003 and was intended to be part of the 2003 Halloween pipes, or, more specifically, one part of the three-pipe "Mountains of Madness" set. My original idea for the MoM pipe(s) was to do a three-pipe transition, in an obvious nod to the gradual descent into weirdness in the novella. Pipe 1 (this pipe) would be a nearly-straight billiard with a tiny blotch of plateau on the base looking squirmy. Pipe 2 would be slightly more bent, and half-consumed by the tentacly plateau base. Pipe 3 would be the final - a bent billiard being sucked under by a large plateau base. Unfortunately, I was definitely dreaming bigger than time and luck were willing to provide - it took forever to find the proper block to do the huge #3 pipe, and this pipe (the first to be roughed and drilled) came out with two problems. It would have to be a blast due to sprinkled pits, and the idea absolutely had to be a smooth. Also, the airhole drilling came in about 1/16" to the right of center... not a serious problem but at the time I was in such a schedule-crunch that I simply set it aside to fiddle with later. It has been sitting around the shop ever since, until now, and has finally been finished as an LB Collector instead of the Talbert Halloween "one-third" it started as. As a billiard blast, it is very nice and colored using the technique I do on many Talbert Briars. The plateau "growth" on the bottom is black and will probably keep it from ever selling, but I like it. Stem is black vulcanite.
