Jennie Haniver

Like the "Chihiro", this pipe was also inspired by a fictional character from the movies - in this case, the siren girl from the old film "The Bermuda Depths". In the story, Jennie is a beautiful young woman, daughter of a rich island family, whose boat is hit by a monstrous storm at sea. While all the others pray to god for help, Jennie prays to "Him"... at the bottom of the ocean, and she is granted her request not to be killed, but to stay young and beautiful forever. This comes with the caveat that she must live in the sea, which proves a problem when she falls for young Magnus. Trying to capture some sense of an underwater siren whose nature was whimsical, sensual, elegant, and yet cruel, was quite difficult in briar! But, it's challenges that make us better, and in the end I was pleased that the overall form of the pipe conveyed a nice balance of beauty and menace. Currently in the collection of Zeke Sparkes.
